Turnovers Plague Pirates in Overtime Loss

Turnovers Plague Pirates in Overtime Loss

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern committed 23 turnovers on Saturday night as they dropped their third game of the season 86-79 to Schreiner in overtime.

Both teams started cautiously offensively until the Pirates began to pull away with back door cuts and points in transition, leading by six 14-8 with 11:16 to go on the clock.

Schreiner's well-placed timeout stopped the run and allowed the Mountaineers to put together a run of their own with unforced Pirate errors to pull within two, 16-14 with 7:40 on the clock.

Trailing by one point Southwestern needed a big bucket and got just that when Daniel Mataya found Travis Kurtz open in the left corner for the three-pointer to give SU a two point lead 26-24 with just over three minutes to play. Mataya followed with a jumper on the next possession to continue the run as Southwestern closed out the half on a 12-0 run to head into the break leading 35-24.

Southwestern scored the first basket of the second half to push their lead to 13, but Schreiner made it known early that they weren't going to lie down and pulled within four, 46-42, with 14 minutes remaining. Mataya and Kurtz teamed up again on two consecutive possessions, Kurtz draining a three from Mataya and Mataya hitting the layup from Kurtz, to give Southwestern a nine point lead, 53-44 with 12:14 remaining.

The Mountaineers refused to go away and took the lead 67-66 with 3:30 left on the clock. After trading jumpers Southwestern pulled ahead 72-71 on a pair of free throws from Michael Cantu with just over a minute to go. As the Pirates headed to the defensive end with the lead, a late foul on the block called on Logan Hurley put Schreiner's Travis Pflughaupt on the line with a chance to win the game. Pflughaupt made the first but missed the second and Cantu's last second shot was off the mark to send the game into overtime 72-72.

The Pirates opened the extra frame with a pair of turnovers that resulted in layups for the Mountaineers. Despite Southwestern's attempts Schreiner remained just out of their reach as they fell 86-79.

Southwestern shot 46.4% for the game and 25% from three point range while Schreiner went 47.7% from the floor and 40.9% from long distance. Pflughaupt led all scorers with 26 points while Hurley led for the Pirates with 19 points. Cantu added in 15 on 6-11 shooting, 4-4 from the free throw line while Mataya added in 14. Cantu was the leading rebounder for SU with nine boards.

The Pirates remain at home in search of their first win of the season as they host Mary Hardin Baylor on Tuesday night. Game time is set of 7:30 pm.
