Crusaders Use Big Second Half Run to Get Past Hendrix College

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team beat Hendrix College 71-57 on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders (2-0) had a quartet of players reach double-digit points on the day led by a double-double outing from Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) who notched 23 points and 11 rebounds. UD fell behind 11-0 early, but tied the game at 13 at the 10:25 mark in the first period. UD took a 10 point lead into the halftime break. A feisty Warriors group cut the Dallas lead to three in the second half, but UD used a 16-1 run to pull away and ultimately grab the non-conference victory.  

Hendrix (1-2) came out on fire running out to an 11-0 lead. After the ensuing bucket from the Warriors, Dallas then went on an 8-0 run to get within two points at the under 12 media timeout. Russell tied up the game with a big bucket underneath the basket. Dallas would eventually take the lead for the first time and extend its lead to 18-15. Seth Stanley hit a three-pointer to tie up the game for Hendrix. Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas) hit a three to retake the lead. Stanley then converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to make it 21-21. Dallas went into the final media timeout up 25-21. Dallas went on a 7-0 run starting at the 4:19 mark. The Crusaders later outscored Hendrix 14-4 in the final four minutes of the period.

Dallas would take a 35-25 lead in to the halftime break. Dallas shot 41.9% (13-31) in the first half and 46.2% (6-13) from three-point range. Hendrix was limited to a 2-9 (22.2%) effort from three-point range. Mathis led all scorers with 13 points, while Seth Stanley notched 11 in that half. Hendrix fell victim to 10 turnovers in that period alone.

Dallas was up 42-32 at the under 16 timeout in the second half. Hendrix broke the scoring drought with a three-pointer. After a missed 1-1 opportunity on the UD side, Hendrix converted two free throws to cut into the narrow UD lead (42-37). Hyde then made a tough layup for the Crusaders to push the Crusaders lead. At the under 12 media timeout Hendrix made it a three-point game with a key run (44-41). A key three-pointer by Hyde grew the Dallas lead once again. After a charge drawn by John Russell, (Bossier City, La.) Dallas went on a 5-0 run capped off by a Wambsganns three-point play (54-43). UD later went on 16-1 run in the half to gather a big lead and secure the win.

Following behind Wambsganns' 23 points was Mathis and Hyde who gathered 15 points each. Russell added 10 points and six rebounds. Dallas shot 43.4% (25-53) from the field and 41.7% (10-24) from three-point range. Russell drew four charges in the game to spark the UD defense.

Stanley paced Hendrix with 21 points as Alex Conrad grabbed 16 points and seven rebounds. Hendrix was limited to a 4-24 (16.7%) mark behind the arc and turned the ball over 17 times.
