The Colorado College swimming and diving teams opened the 2016-17 season in fine fashion Saturday at the CU Buff Invite in Boulder, Colo. The Tigers won the women's team title and the men finished second.
The women's team was led by juniors
Emily Harrison and
Mary Rose Donahue. Harrison won the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle races, while Donahue easily won both diving events.
Three other Tigers captured individual victories on Saturday as well. Freshman
Alma Jukic won the 200-yard freestyle, while juniors
Ellen Silk and
Hannah Cooper captured the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, respectively.
Freshman
Jio Chang was very impressive in her first collegiate meet by placing second in three events, the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races and 100 butterfly, while fellow freshman
Sarah Dunbar finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
The Tigers dominated the four relay events, winning three of them and finishing second in another.
On the men's side, freshman
Eric Dallesasse led the way by winning the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly race. He also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke, which fellow freshman
Stefan Bay won with a time of 55.66 seconds.
Senior
Crane Sarris and freshman
Michael Heinonen also produced some top results for the Tigers. Sarris won the 200 freestyle and finished second in the 200 free, while Heinonen placed second in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle races and fifth in the 200 freestyle.
The men's team also captured three firsts and a second in the four relay events.
"I was really pleased with the way we raced today," head coach
Anne Goodman James said. "With only three weeks of training under our belts, we were surprisingly tough throughout this long day of racing. It was a great way to start the season, and I feel great about how gritty this team is, both in practice and competition."
Both teams are idle until they host Colorado School of Mines in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Schlessman Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
