Gents Fall 3-0 at Schreiner On Sunday

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary men's soccer team was blanked 3-0 by the Schreiner Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Mountaineer Soccer Field.

The Gents (3-6-1, 0-2 SCAC) fell 1-0 in overtime to Trinity on Friday night in their conference opener in San Antonio. Schreiner improved to 2-9-1 and 1-1 in league play with Sunday's shutout win. Centenary has now been held scoreless in three-consecutive matches after falling 2-0 on Sept. 26 at Southwestern.

Senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played all 90 minutes and allowed the three goals and made one save. Schreiner GK Matthew Shaw pitched the shutout and also collected one save. The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead into the half after goals by Mason Lubbe and Zaaron Gonzales in the fifth and 12th minutes respectively. Iseah Hernandez assisted on Lubbe's goal and Charlie Din was credited with the assist on the second goal by Gonzales. Din added a goal in the 65th minute for the 3-0 final margin.

Schreiner finished with a slight edge (13-12) in shots while the Gents held a decisive advantage in corner kicks (8-3) but could not capitalize. The teams combined for 19 fouls and three yellow cards were issued in the match.

Junior MF Jaron Petreas (Denton, Texas) and sophomore Michael Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) each took three shots to lead the Gents' offense. Both players entered the weekend ranked in the top 10 in the conference in shots.

Centenary will now return home after two-straight weeks on the road to face the St. Thomas Celts on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Mayo Field. The Gents are 14-5-3 in their last 22 home matches and the Maroon and White will be meeting St. Thomas for the first time since edging the Celts in PK's last spring to win the SCAC Tournament title on their home field.
