The No. 12 Colorado College volleyball team went 1-1 in the first day of the 2011 Molten Colorado College Invitational, Friday in Reid Gymnasium.
Colorado College battled a tough No. 2 Washington University in the final match of the day, falling 3-0.
Washington is perfect this season, not losing a single set in 12 matches.
In the first set, the Tigers were able to stay within one point, until the Bears went on a 3-0 run with three attacking errors by CC. Washington continued to win the set, 25-19.
In the second set, Washington started off with a dominate 7-0 run to begin the game.
Colorado College slowly battled its way back to within one with a block by sophomore
Devin Wilkinson and freshman
Kristen Liberty to make it 14-15. Washington, however, was able to keep its lead, winning the set 25-20.
The Tigers pushed the limits in the third set tying the game, 24-24 with a block by Wilkinson and
Meredith Ballard. The Bears went on to win the game, 26-24. This was the first time this season that Washington has had to score extra points to win a set.
Senior
Hannah Varnell and junior
Laura Goldsmith led the Tiger defense with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Wilkinson added a season-high seven blocks to lead CC at the net.
Senior
Amy Schornack had a team-high 23 assists. Goldsmith led the offense with six kills, while Liberty added five.
Colorado College won its first game of the tournament, winning 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-15) over Endicott College.
The Tigers had 14 blocks as a team to hold the Gulls to a .033 hitting percentage.
Schornack got her third triple-double of her career in the first day's game with 40 assists, 10 digs and 10 kills along with a team-high four blocks.
Junior
Kate Squires led the Tigers on offense with a career-high 13 kills and a career-high .722 hitting percentage. Goldsmith and senior
Sarah Schmoker added nine kills each for CC.
Varnell led CC on defense with a team-high 18 digs. Goldsmith and Schmoker each added nine and eight digs, respectively.
The tournament continues on Saturday when No. 2 Washington takes on No. 15 Concordia at 10 a.m. Colorado College faces No. 9 Juniata College at noon. The Tigers finish the tournament as they take on Concordia at 4 p.m.
