Abby Holland scored a game-high 23 points as Trinity University maintained its half-game lead atop the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 74-49 victory over Colorado College on Saturday.
The contest followed a pattern that has become all too familiar for CC.
TU built what appeared to be comfortable leads, only to see Colorado College claw its way back to keep the game close.
Trinity took a 50-32 cushion on a pair of Kelly Simmons free throws with a little less than three minutes to play in the third quarter, however CC countered with seven straight points to close to within 11 when
Katie Beth Jones sank two free throws with 46 seconds to go.
Jade Odom hit a jumper two minutes into the fourth quarter pull Colorado College to within 13, but TU scored the next seven points to reclaim the momentum.
CC was within three points at the start of the second quarter, but Trinity utilized a 12-2 surge during the opening five minutes to begin to pull away.
After a jumper by
McKenzee Gertz cut the Colorado College deficit to 27-20 with 2:18 remaining before halftime, TU ran off seven consecutive points before Odom's layup made the score 34-22 after 20 minutes.
Odom led CC with 14 points, reaching double-digits for the 12 time this season. Â
Nia Duplain added nine points and grabbed five rebounds.
Casey Torbet produced nine points, six assists and five rebounds for Colorado College, which dropped to 8-10 overall and 5-5 in the SCAC.
Gertz grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to help CC post a commanding 54-38 edge on the boards.
Unfortunately, Colorado College was unable to capitalize on its additional chances. Colorado College was just 1-for-13 from behind the arc and shot just a fraction better than 30 percent from the field.
Hailey Coleman and Emily Daniel added 10 points apiece for Trinity, which improved to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
CC concludes its run of three consecutive road games on Friday, Jan. 25, at the University of Dallas.
