PIRATES STEAMROLL TIGERS ON SENIOR DAY

PIRATES STEAMROLL TIGERS ON SENIOR DAY

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern men's soccer team made the final home game for its six seniors a memorable one as they defeated Sewanee 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the win SU improves to 11-6 on the year 8-1 in the SCAC and keeps their post season hopes alive.

The Pirate men needed just six minutes to take the lead in the match. After a couple of great looks at goal that didn't materialize, senior Tim Hord (pictured) placed a perfect lofting corner kick into the middle of the box and junior Colin McCulloch headed it home putting SU up 1-0.

McCulloch nearly made it two goals on a header crossed in from Dishon Isaac but it drifted just left of the goal not five minutes later.

Southwestern did make it a two goal advantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half, however. First-year Matt Nickell found first-year Thomas Davis who flicked the ball to the far post where first-year Steve Resnik came streaking in and put the ball away.

The Pirates pushed to three goals on a long corner kick by Resnik that floated in the wind over the box and landed at the feet of first-year Timothy Eamma who settled and hit a perfectly placed ball towards the far upper 90 of the goal giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Senior Fernando Leon made it a four goal lead with a missle just under the crossbar on a direct free kick that went over the wall and into the net with 26 minutes remaining in the game. Fellow senior Adam Pitts was playing aggressively up top and nearly beat the entire Sewanee defense on a Southwestern clear up the field, but Sewanee's keeper narrowly beat him to the ball in the box.

Senior Alex Keller made the five goal lead a reality when senior Tom Holleman found Keller open in the middle of the field. Keller beat two defenders and tucked his shot inside the post with one minute remaining in the contest.

The Pirates dominated the contest, taking 10 more shots (22-12) and three more corners (8-5) than the Tigers.

The win sets up crucial road games to close out the regular season as they head to face the #3 and #4 teams in the conference in DePauw and Sewanee. Wins against both teams would give the Pirates a great shot at their first post-season berth. SU takes on Centre on Friday night at 8:00 pm before facing DePauw on Sunday at noon.
