Crusaders drop Saturday's Contest to Concordia
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell 69-43 on Saturday afternoon to Concordia University at the Maher Center. The Tornados (2-4) tallied 16 of the first 18 points of the game en route to a double-digit lead at the end of the first quarter. Dallas (1-4) was victimized by 30 turnovers, which helped the road team use a 27-8 scoring advantage. Concordia also held a 10-point difference (18-8) in second chance points.
Madi Horne (Paradise, Texas) notched her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Crusaders. Beyonce Perry (Lake Jackson, Texas) eclipsed double-digits for the first time since the first two contests with a team-high 14 points. Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) chimed in with 12 points and six boards.
Down 18-4 to start the game, Perry sparked 6-2 run for UD in the last two minutes with a three-pointer. Horne scored a layup and drew the harm but missed the free throw. Alissa Dutton (Houston, Texas) split at the line to close the opening stanza.
Perry nailed a trey a minute into the second quarter and a layup by Dutton after a good assist by Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) to try and get the gap within single-digits. Dallas would be outscored by four in the second quarter to trail 14 (34-20) at intermission.
The Crusaders gave their best run in the early part of the third quarter as Oliveti caught fire with two field goals and a pair of free throws. A couple trifectas and an old fashioned three-point play for Concordia outstretched the margin. The team shot 4-9 from three in the quarter, which led the team to nine for the contest.
The Tornados scored their most points in a period with 21 in the third. Dallas did as well with 16. It was a slow scoring fourth quarter with the teams only combining for six points at the media timeout initiated by Dallas calling a 30-second timeout 2:15 into the quarter. Dallas would be outscored by seven, as it fell for the third consecutive time.
Concordia was led by Payton Berger with 15 points and contributed seven rebounds. Madi Maxwell had nine points, and Chelsea Cogburn snatched a team-high eight boards with four on each side. Nine different players swiped a steal leading the team to 18.
Both teams shot nearly the same percentage from the field, with Concordia edging 37.5 percent (27-72) to 35.6 percent (16-45). Each side also was under 55 percent, missing a combined 14 free throws. Concordia was whistled for 10 more fouls (23-13). The Tornados grabbed a 41-34 edge on the glass, including 18-8 on offensive boards.
