St. Thomas Plows Mary Hardin Baylor 4-1

Tonight the University of St. Thomas Men's soccer team plowed through Mary-Hardin Baylor University by defeating them 4-1 at Houston Sports Park.

The first half Celts went up 1-0 with a speedy goal by Danny Castro in the 19th minute. This first breakaway of the game took the crusaders by surprise, and Castro comfortably placed the ball in the bottom right pocket of the goal. After a few other chances, the Celts' next opportunity came in the late 29th minute when Gabe Salako slotted another one in the back of the net.

During this half the Celts' defense held off the Crusaders attackers comfortably. In the late minutes of the first half, Crusader Hunter Shanks was sent-off for serious foul play.

As the second half proceeded, the game saw a few more cautions awarded to both teams, as they fought a tough battle. In the 60th minute of the game, Celts added another tally to the scoreboard when Taty Aleman put another one past the keeper. Just seven minutes later, Ian Alvarez added yet another goal to the scoreboard to seal the deal. This half saw a lot of physicality and the Crusaders had another player sent-off for their second caution of the game. Despite being down two players, before the final of the game the Crusaders managed to put a goal past goalkeeper Cristo Gayoso

Post game, we asked Coach Ian Clerihew how he felt about the result, "I'm happy we dominated the majority of the match and I was able to get a lot of our players some minutes. This was a big time result against a team that competes in the NCAA tournament."

Next up the Celts play McMurry on Friday, September 9th away with a 6pm kick-off.
