Box Score For the second day in a row, lightning struck late in the game as the Colorado College women's basketball stormed from behind to defeat Trinity University.
Less than 24 hours after erasing a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit during a come-from-behind victory, CC overcame a nine-point hole in the fourth quarter and defeated Trinity, 64-61 in overtime, on Saturday morning.
In the two-game sweep, Colorado College outscored TU 42-23 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
"This was a huge weekend for our program and a true team effort," head coach
Katherine Menendez said. "We kept a 'next possession' mentality when were down and valued our defensive possessions, which allowed us a chance at overtime."
Colorado College scored the first six points in the extra session on a pair of
Rosie Braley layups and two free throws by
McKenzee Gertz. Then, with the game on the line,
Anna Fanelli calmly sealed the victory by making four free throws during the final 43 seconds.
CC trailed 48-39 when Ashlyn Milton made one of two free throws with 6:30 remaining in regulation, then utilized a 13-4 surge to level the score for the first time on
Talia Cloud's three-pointer with 1:22 to play.
Trinity took a two-point lead on a layup by Kelly Simmons with 57 seconds to go, but Cloud's bucket 25 seconds later and a missed jumper by Trinity's Hailey Coleman at the buzzer sent the game to overtime.
The Texas Tigers appeared to be in control when they built a 45-32 lead with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter, but a jumper by Gertz and a three-pointer from Cloud trimmed CC's deficit to eight with 10 minutes to play.
"
Rosie Braley and
Talia Cloud brought a huge presence inside and our guards, led by
Anna Fanelli's effort at the point, did a great job finding them," Menendez said. "
McKenzee Gertz did an excellent job generating scores in the half court, too."
Gertz and Braley each scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Colorado College.
Cloud finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Fanelli 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.
After being outrebounded 27-24 in the first half, CC finished the game with a 41-36 advantage.
