Baseball Falls 6-3 To Trinity On Friday
The Centenary baseball team fell 6-3 to the nationally-ranked Trinity University Tigers by score of 6-3 on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series in a battle of the league’s top two teams at Shehee Stadium.

The Diamond Gents (18-16, 12-6 SCAC) and Tigers (29-9, 15-4 SCAC) will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. The Diamond Gents will honor their 2024 senior class following the second game on Saturday. Centenary is now 7-3 at home this season while Trinity improved to 8-3 on the road.

Trinity was the preseason pick to win the conference with Centenary predicted to finish second. Trinity entered the series ranked ninth in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll and 11th in the American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Div. III Coaches Poll.
Sophomore LHP Cody Myers (Friendswood, Texas) started for Centenary and suffered the loss despite pitching tossing his third complete game of the season and striking out 10 batters, fanning 10+ for the fourth time this season. Myers allowed six runs, five earned, and 10 hits in his nine innings of work with one walk and one home run allowed. He faced 37 batters and threw 125 pitches – 88 for strikes.
Joseph Chavana (7-2) started for the Tigers and earned the win as he allowed just three runs, two earned, and five hits in six innings with three BB, one K, and one home run allowed. He faced 23 batters, threw a pair of wild pitches, and finished with 92 total pitches (55 strikes). Will Hellings notched his fifth save of the season as he worked the final three innings and blanked Centenary on two hits with no BB and five K's. He faced 12 batters, hit one and threw one wild pitch, and 40 of his 62 total pitches were for strikes.
Centenary finished with seven hits, drew three walks, struck out six times, made one error, and left five on base. Trinity had 10 hits, walked once, struck out 10 times, did not commit an error and left four on base.
Sophomore LF Carson Livesay (Lafayette, La.) was 2-4 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first and finished 2-4 with a run scored. The homer was Livesay's fourth of the season. Sophomore CF Collin Pitts (Lufkin, Texas) finished 0-3 but had an RBI sacrifice fly, senior RF Austyn Benoit (Welsh, La.) went 2-3 with a double and a run scored, senior C Jake Gonce (Katy, Texas) was 1-3, and sophomore 3B Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) finished 0-2 but walked twice. Freshman DH Walker Wicklund (Shreveport, La.) was 1-3 with a BB and senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) finished 1-4 with a run scored.
The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the first as 1B Christian Holloway doubled in a pair for a 2-0 lead. Livesay's solo homer cut the Diamond Gents' deficit in half but the Tigers responded with three more runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-1. 2B Colt Harris had a two-RBI double and Holloway struck again, this time with an RBI single that scored Harris.
Benoit scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2 and Pitts' sac fly in the seventh scored Boone to make it 5-3. A solo homer by RF Maddox McDonald in the top of the ninth gave the Tigers their 6-3 lead and was the final run of the game.
Harris and Holloway finished a combined 4-7 with five RBI, two runs scored, a BB, and a pair of doubles while CF Jack Peterson finished 1-5 with two runs scored. LF Kaleb Woodward was 1-4 with a run scored, DH Alex Monson and 3B Kai Tinker each finished 1-4 and SS Jack Baker went 1-3 with a double.

Looking Ahead:
The 2024 SCAC Baseball Tournament is scheduled for May 3-5 in Cleburne, Texas. Centenary has appeared in the SCAC Championship game five times in its history, winning it twice and finishing as runner-up in 2013, 2015, and 2018. The top four teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the 2024 SCAC Tournament.
