Men's Soccer Defeats Schreiner on Senior Day

GEORGETOWN, Texas — On senior day, senior forward Dejan Savic left a lasting final impression on the Southwestern University home crowd, scoring the first goal of the match in the Pirates' 3-1 victory over Schreiner University. 

Savic scored an unassisted goal a little under 13 minutes into the match, his first of the season and fifth of his career. He was one of four seniors honored after the match, along with defenders Wil Mekelburg and Logan Jenkins, and midfielder Vicente Lopez

The Pirates dominated in the first half with a 12-5 advantage in shots, placing nine of them on goal. Southwestern pressured Schreiner on its own end of the field, gaining a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. 

Almost 30 minutes into the match, the Pirates peppered Schreiner with a number of shots off corner kicks, finally breaking through when Luis Ramirez found Seth Holzmann 34 minutes into the match for a 2-0 lead. 

Three minutes later, Garrison Van Houten scored an unassisted goal on an opportunity generated by another corner kick, triggered by Pablo Vilas

Both teams played to a near draw in the second half with each team getting 10 shots and two corner kicks. Schreiner picked up its goal at the 76:38 mark on an unassisted score by Dylan Blough. 

Jackson Krueger played the entire match at goalie for the Pirates, making four saves on five shots on goal. 

With the win, the Pirates improve to 9-4-2 on the season, including 3-2-1 in conference play, sitting in fifth in the conference standings. Southwestern will return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in a road match against Trinity University at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently third in the SCAC with a 4-2 conference record.
