Gents Edge ETBU 2-1 On Road Monday Night

Marshall, Texas - The Centenary men's soccer team edged the East Texas Baptist University Tigers, 2-1, on Monday evening in a non-conference match at Cornish Field.

The Gents, playing their final non-conference match of the regular season, snapped their 10-game losing streak to improve to 4-11-1 as they won for the first time since a 2-1 home victory over Belhaven on Sept. 17. The Tigers fell to 4-10-2 with the loss.

Centenary rebounded nicely from a tough 7-0 loss on Senior Night last Friday at Mayo Field versus Colorado College to drop to 0-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Gents now lead the all-time series, 4-2-1. The Gents have now allowed one goal or less nine times this season.

The Maroon and White struck first in Monday's match as junior MF Colton Howard (Keller, Texas) connected on a penalty kick in the 10th minute of the first half for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later the Tigers evened the score as JaeShaun Osborn scored off an assist from Gabriel Alvarez.

The match stayed tied until the 69th minute when freshman MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.) found the net off an assist from Howard. The goal was Amato's second of his rookie season to tie senior D Diego Hernandez (Carrollton, Texas) for the team lead.

Centenary senior GK Patrick Riley (Baton Rouge, La.) played all 90 minutes to pick up the win as he recorded four saves. ETBU played a pair of goalies on Monday as Anthony Lozada started and played the first half, allowing one goal and making four saves. Tristan Whelchel played the second half and made three saves but yielded the winning goal.

The Gents were aggressive on offense all evening as they finished with a decisive advantage in shots (17-5) including an 11-3 edge in the first half. Centenary took five corner kicks to four for the Tigers and the teams combined for 20 fouls, with ETBU whistled for 11. Howard led the Gents with five shots, four on goal, in his 59 minutes of action.

The Gents will now return to SCAC play to finish the regular season this weekend in Texas as the Gents face Austin College on Friday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. and Dallas on Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m.
