No. 22/23 Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth in Loaded Westbrook Invitational Field

The Tigers shaved three strokes from Saturday’s opening round for a 304 (+20) to finish ahead of 13th-ranked Bethel and 28th-ranked UC Santa Cruz; Hsiu finishes tied for 10th overall with a two-round 149 (+7)

PEORIA, Ariz. – No. 22/23 Trinity University Women's Golf dropped out of its day-one tie with No. 16/17 Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday to finish fifth in the 2023 Westbrook Invitational despite improving by three shots at 304 (+20) in Sunday's round at the par-71, 5,810 Lakes Course at the Westbrook Village Golf Club.

The Tigers fell in line behind No. 12/10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CA), No. 4/5 George Fox University (OR)—this weekend's host—No. 2/1 University of Redlands (CA) and the No. 16/17 Titans but bested No. 16/13 Bethel University (MN) and University of California-Santa Cruz—ranked 28th in NCAA III in the latest GolfStat.com metrics.

Junior Kiona Hsiu (Missouri City, Texas / Elkins) finished in a tie for 10th to lead Trinity's lineup for the weekend as she closed the event with a four-over 75. Hsiu kept a two-over pace on either side of the course, maintained by a birdie on the par-four ninth. All four of the counted cards for the Tigers were two-over or better through the front nine after taking the course on a tee-time start from the first tee box.

Sophomore Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino (Marbella, Spain / Atalaya) stole the show early in the morning as she logged a hole-in-one on the par-three third, one of only three eagles across the 55-player field for the tournament though all three were posted in Sunday's second round. Sanchez finished in a three-way tie for 16th as she closed her Sunday trip with a 73—a five-shot improvement from the first round.

Juniors Erin Flynn (League City, Texas / Clear Falls) and Lucy Hansen (Gilbert, Ariz. / Camp Verde) rounded out Sunday's counted cards with nearly-identical 78s. Both Tigers posted the exact same scores through the final 11 holes of Sunday's round while each picked up a birdie in the first six holes. Hansen matched Sanchez's par-four birdie on the sixth while Flynn found a bird on the par-five fourth. Flynn finished tied for 24th overall in the field while Hansen knocked off four shots from Saturday's round to finish 31st.

Sanchez led the tournament as the only player to finish under par on par-threes between her one-swing effort on the third pin plus birdies on both the seventh and 12th pins in Saturday's round.

Hsiu posted the second-best rate on par-fives for the event as she went two-under through six total attempts at the long holes with birdies on the fourth and 18th in Saturday's round.

No. 22/23 Trinity Women's Golf shifts to the Texas Cup March 19-20, the annual event hosted by No. 8/4 University of Texas-Dallas. A visit to Georgetown, Texas April 3-4 stands between the Texas Cup and the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
