Colorado College wiped out a 10-point deficit midway through the second half and nearly clawed its way out of a seven-point hole during the final 36 seconds, but Jordy Stephenson's three-pointer with under four seconds to go went off the rim and Finlandia University escaped Reid Gymnasium with an 80-77 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore guard Hannah Hoopingarner scored a career-high 22 points for the Tigers, 18 of which came from behind the three-point line, and her steal with six seconds to play gave CC a chance to send the game to overtime.
Becky Luetjen had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her 11th career double-double. Marissa Gradoz added 12 points, while Sydney Leichliter reached double figures for the second time this season with 10.
Janele Linna's free throws gave the Lions a 79-73 lead with 23 seconds to play, and after Gradoz scored on a layup, Linzy Monticello made the score 80-75 on the second of two free throws. Luetjen cut the lead to three with seven seconds to play, but that proved to be the Tigers' final points.
Finlandia took a 54-44 lead on a jumper by Emily Lehto with 12:10 remaining in the game, but Marissa Gradoz had six of her 12 points during a 19-8 run that saw CC take its first lead since early in the first half on a pair of Stephenson free throws with 6:39 to go.
Colorado College built a 67-62 after Becky Luetjen scored with 5:57 to go, only to see the visitors regain the lead when Monticello knocked down a jump shot with 3:46 left in the game.
Linna paced the Lions with 19 points, including the final four on free throws inside the final minute that provided the winning margin. Monticello finished with 16 points, 10 assists and six rebounds, while Shaikiera Armstrong had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.
CC shot just 37-percent from the floor and made only 11 of 20 free throws.
The Tigers, who were playing without junior guard Emily Wattman-Turner, lost a second starter to injury when sophomore forward Kalli Kemling was cut under her eye 1:40 into the game and did not return.
Colorado College (0-4) returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Nebraska Wesleyan University.
