CC Blanks Schreiner, 2-0

Box Score Colorado College turned in a dominating effort at both ends of the pitch to post a 2-0 victory over Schreiner University on Friday night at Washburn Field.

Theo Hooker made just one save while posting the 10th clean sheet of his career, but it was a big one.

Just 4:40 into the contest, the sophomore goalkeeper came off his line to smother a shot by Schreiner's Gregg Gutierrez, who collected a through ball at the top of the box.

"That's what makes good goalkeepers great, their ability to concentrate and be there for their team in the one moment," head coach Scott Palguta said. "Theo had a quiet night, but he stepped up when he needed to early in the first half."

The only time Hooker touched the ball the remainder of the game was on a pair of SU corner kicks and a couple of crosses that did not connect.

CC took the lead in the 35th minute when senior midfielder Max Grossenbacher applied pressure to a Schreiner defender, whose attempted header went through goalkeeper Blake Lawson and into the net for an own goal.

"The pressure helped," Palguta said. "Max's willingness to press the ball makes them uncomfortable and things like that happen. We always say to our defenders bad things happen when you are facing your own goal. A little bit of pressure goes a long way."

The Tigers added an insurance goal with 6:31 remaining in regulation when junior defender Jack McCormick scored on a header off a corner kick by senior midfielder Ryan Huettel.

"Ryan laid up a great ball to the back post and I just tried to get on the end of it," McCormick said. "I got lucky the guy missed it and threw it over to the back pipe."

CC, which finished with a 19-1 advantage in total shots, improved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

"We need to get a little more ruthless in the final third," Palguta said. "We created enough chances, but there were a few more goals out there. Even though the score may not indicate it, we felt like we were in control most of the game. Overall, it was very mature team performance."

Lawson made four saves for the Mountaineers, who slipped to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

"It was a great effort all around," McCormick said. "We had some young guys in the back that played really well, and Theo made a big save like he always does. Our first shutout is huge and we'll take the momentum into Sunday's game."

Colorado College plays host to Trinity University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
