'Roo Women Dominant in Win Over UWS

SHERMAN, Texas - Lina Cruz tallied twice and the Austin College women's soccer team put on a dominating performance throughout, opening the 2019 season with a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin-Superior on Friday evening at the Dr. Jack Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex.

The 'Roos made new head coach Michele Housden's debut a memorable one, with the 'Roos out-shooting the Yellowjackets 19-5 in the match. Austin College was in control early but unable to find the net until Cruz broke through with her first score in the 28th minute of action. That score came when Mac Kersey played the ball from the endline to the right of the goal into the box, and Cruz was able to punch it in to make it a 1-0 game.

Chloe Towler would score to make it just over six minutes later, blasting home a goal from six yards out off of a free kick from Kristi Stevens, and Austin College would take a 2-0 lead into halftime. The margin would grow to 3-0 early in the second half, as Shelby Smith played a long ball into the box, with Cruz collecting it and chipping it over the head of the UWS keeper in the 49th minute.

The Yellowjackets got on the board at the 61:15 mark, but that's as close as things would get. Meredith Harris made two saves in the second half, after Maya Erwin and the 'Roo defense pitched a first half shutout.

Austin College is back in action on Sunday as they host Louisiana College at 12:00 p.m.
