SHERMAN, Texas - McMurry University swimming opened the 2017-18 season with split results in dual meet at Austin College. The War Hawks' women team battled to a 103-97 win, while the men fell 129-54 to the Kangaroos.
The women's victory was also the first in the college coaching career of McM's first-year head coach
Casey Pacheco.
Zandria Rodriguez was a double individual winner for the War Hawks. Rodriguez won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:06.98, as well as the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.74.
Kaylee Cook was second to Rodriguez in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.63).
Senior
Robyn Remschel also won two races. Remschel won both the 50 freestyle (26.16 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.31). Cook also picked up a second place in the 50 free (27.97), as well.
Distance specialist
Katie Gorka earned a first place in the grueling 1000-yard freestyle, touching at 12:27.72 minutes. Gorka then managed a second place in the 500 freestyle (5:58.18), getting edged out of first place by 5/100ths of a seconds.
The War Hawks also won both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, as well.
On the men's side, newcomer Brayden Miller won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:10.52 minutes. Fellow newcomer Jeremiah Atkins picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000 freestyle (12:13.62) and 500 freestyle (5:58.97).
Junior
Jerick Pena was second in the 100 backstroke at 55.14 seconds, with teammate
Zakai Love finishing third (1:11.75). Love was also third in the 50 freestyle (23.88).
McM's men also won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:36.98 minutes.
