Men's Soccer Opens Season With Double OT Draw

Men's Soccer Opens Season With Double OT Draw

In a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament First Round battle, the Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team took the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders to a double overtime 1-1 draw in the season opener.

Facing the American Southwestern Conference favorites, the Pirates turned to last season's formula, dictating the terms of the match by having their opponent fight for every inch on the soccer pitch.

Southwestern frustrated UMHB with its physical defense, committing 15 of the match's 21 fouls but drawing more Crusaders yellow cards (four) than shots on goal (three).

The Pirates struck first at the 59:43 mark in the second half when Will Mekelburg found Jack Adams for the first goal of the season. Marston Fisher tied the game on a corner kick from Marcelo Gaitan in the 82nd minute for the Crusaders.

Southwestern goalie Sam Laude had two saves on three shots on goal and his counterpart, Isai Olvera, had five saves for the Crusaders.

The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, Sep. 1 for a home match against Concordia Texas.
