Keleher Felton made a pair of big-time saves early in the game and
Skyler Stark-Ragsdale struck for what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the first half as the Colorado College men's soccer team remained unbeaten in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 2-0 victory over Centenary College on Saturday at Stewart Field.
"The spine of our team was excellent today," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "Keleher, as always, came up with the big save when needed.
John Schuler was steady and consistent in midfield."
Felton made a leaping save on David Barbera's blast from the top of the box in the 10th minute, then he made a kick save on Andres Bautista's shot from the right side of the box almost six minutes later to keep the Gents off the board.
After surviving a couple of close calls, the Tigers began to find their offensive rhythm and broke through in the 40th minute when Stark-Ragsdale got on the end of a cross from a
Kevin Peterson and netted his second-career game winner from the middle of the box.
Peterson's assist was his first career point.
CC added an insurance goal early in the 72nd minute when
Jackson Silverstein created space with his brilliant footwork and slipped the ball to
Kiran Singh who was stationed in the center of the box. Singh turned past his defender and put a shot past Centenary goalkeeper Sami Borchalli.
"
Kiran Singh, after a frustrating first half, composed himself and scored a very nice second-half goal," Palguta said. "He has been tremendous for us so far this season."
Singh leads the Tigers with three goals and six points, while Silverstein is tied for first with two assists and tied for second with four points.
The Gents tried to exert more offensive pressure during the final 19 minutes by sending more players forward, but the Colorado College allowed just one more errant shot while posting its first clean sheet of the season.
The Tigers produced a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, while each team launched 10 total shots.
Felton stopped three shots, all in the first half, while posting his fifth career shutout.
"I think there is still a lot of room for improvement with this group, but shutout wins have been hard to come by and it was nice to keep our opponent off the score sheet," Palguta said. "We will need to be stingier defensively moving forward."
Colorado College Standouts
Miles Montgomery led the Tigers with three shots, one of which went off the inside of the post.
Kiran Singh and
Jackson Silverstein each put both of their shots on target.
Centenary Standouts
Andres Bautista led the Gents with three shots, one of which was on target.
Sami Borchalli made five saves for Centenary.
