Spring Break Blog: Day 1

Spring break 2019 is in full swing for Bethel Athletics as many teams have made their way to warmer climates for the week away from the Bethel University campus in Arden Hills. Throughout the next seven days we'll keep you up-to-date on all the happenings of the six spring sports in action down in The Sunshine State. Baseball: Bethel 1, Old Westbury 0 (Box Score 1) | Bethel 13, Old Westbury 0 (Box Score 2)
Junior Jake Marsh took to the mound for his first collegiate start picking up the win in a complete game effort. It only took 73 pitches for the preseason All-American to shutout the Panthers allowing a minimal two hits. He ended the game with five strikeouts.

Joey Fredrickson drove in the lone run in game one. Fredrickson's single just inside the right field line scored Mitch Butvilas who rocked a two-out double off the bottom of the right field fence in the first.

Game two saw an offensive spark from the Royals who scored 13 runs on 17 hits.  Oddly enough BU put up five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth after scoring one in both the first and third inning. Joey Fredrickson led the way in game two going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Ty Koehn off the bench was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Brady Leahy picked up his first win of the season throwing five innings of shutout work.

BU will enjoy a day off tomorrow as they head to Fort Myers Beach before returning to action Tuesday against Bethany College.

Softball: Bethel 18, Stevenson 4 (5 inns. | Box Score) | Bethel 9, Anderson (IN) 1 (5 inns. | Box Score)
In its first games of the Spring break trip, the Royals came out swinging on the offensive end. They combined to outscore their opponents 27-5 picking up a pair of wins in shortened game fashion.

Jamie Axelberg was on another level going 4-for-7 with six RBIs as she now has 11 on the year. Calli Maki homered in game one as part of a six-run second inning after the Royals plated 10 in their first at bat. Maki picked up the win in the circle against Stevenson while Hannah Schmidt stays perfect on the season with a win against Anderson.

BU takes on Machester University tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. ET before taking on Mount Saint Mary College (NY) at Noon.

Men's Tennis: Colorado College 5, Bethel 4 (Box Score)
The Royals snapped a four game winning streak in a tight one with Colorado College. BU jumped out to a 2-1 lead taking the top two doubles matches by 8-6 scores.

In singles play, Erik Beckers at No. 2 doubles won 6-0, 6-1 before Jason Reilly battled to his second consecutive three set victory. Reilly took the opening set 6-3 before falling 7-5 in set two. He once again dominated the third set to take it 10-3.

BU takes on the Illinois Institute of Technology tomorrow at noon ET.

Women's Tennis: Bethel 9, Colorado College 0 (Box Score)
Make it three straight shutouts for the Royals as they swept  the Tigers. Bethel did not drop a set with its top three singles players in Grace Riermann, Maggie Riermann and Mackenzie Novak staying perfect on the season.

The Riermann sisters at No. 1 doubles and Sydney Rott and Meghan Schuler at No. 3 doubles both took their matches by scores of 8-2. Jill Weinzettel and Mackenzie Novak rolled their way through No. 2 doubles 8-0.

The Royals take on Calvin College tomorrow morning beginning at 8 a.m. ET
