Austin College Women Fall at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team struggled to get things going offensively early on and a big third quarter for Southwestern pushed the Pirates past the 'Roos 76-73 on Friday night. The 'Roos are now 12-2 overall and 5-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Austin College shot 35.8% from the field and were out-rebounded 37-to-28 in the game as Southwestern grabbed a 15-14 lead after the first quarter and, after the 'Roos battled back to take a halftime lead, outscored Austin College 20-9 in the third to take a 49-41 lead heading into the fourth. Austin College poured in 32 points in the fourth quarter but came up short of their comeback bid, dropping their second game in a row after opening the season with 12 straight victories.

Reagan Chiaverini led the 'Roos with 17 points and added eight rebounds, and Sarah Gwin came off the bench to hit 4-of-5 threes to chip in 16 points. Natalie McCoy scored 14 for the 'Roos, hitting 10-of-12 free throws, and Kacie West contributed 10 points. Southwestern used a 12-to-2 edge in second chance points to top the 'Roos, and hit 47.4% of their field goal attempts in the game. Zhazze Brown scored 20 for the Pirates to lead all scorers.

Austin College will look to bounce back on Saturday night as they head to Seguin to take on defending conference champion Texas Lutheran.
