Women's Soccer drops nail-biter to Howard Payne, 5-4

Women's Soccer dropped their season opening match to Howard Payne after a high scoring affair went the distance. The Yellow Jackets downed the Celts, 5-4.

 

The Celts would strike first with a Karson Funderburk goal in the fifth minute, assisted by Mary Pham. However, the Yellow Jackets wouldn't waste their time evening the score with a 10th minute goal. This would start an offensive explosion for Howard Payne as they would go on to net three more goals in the half. As the half was expiring, UST was able to chip away at their deficit with Jennifer Rodriguez' first collegiate goal.

 

St. Thomas would control the majority of the second half, outshooting HPU 8 to 3. Funderburk would score her second goal of the game in the 51st minute after a beautiful assist from Kelsie Droptini. The Yellow Jackets were unable to stop the Celts momentum as a Brooke Le goal would knot things up at four

 

A late game goal from Howard Payne would be the final blow to hand UST their first loss.

 

Karson Funderburk filled the stat sheet with two goals and one assist in her first game as a Celt.

 

Women's Soccer will be back in action Friday, September 3rd when they travel to Abilene to take on Hardin-Simmons.
