Pirates Shut Out Mountaineers on Senior Day

Pirates Shut Out Mountaineers on Senior Day

GEORGETOWN, Texas  –  The Southwestern women's soccer team celebrated their seniors and grabbed another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon.

Starting the first half, the Pirate's were quick to put the ball into Mountaineer territory with three quick shots at Schreiner goalie Maddie Saucedo within the first three minutes of the game. With no goals falling, the Pirates started shooting at will to try to make a shot before the half ended. Even after 19 shots at the Mountaineer goal, nothing got past Saucedo, who collected 12 saves in the first half.

In the second half, the Pirates immediately took control of the ball and tried to get the much-needed goal they missed in the first half.  Karlee Holmes and senior Alexis Barrientez took two shots at the goal which were both picked up by Saucedo, but Whitney Whitehill finally made the much-needed goal after a pass from Alexis Guajardo. The Pirates took the lead and after the first goal, Barrientez continued to attack the Mountaineer goal, trying to seal the win for the team. With pressure and persistence from the Pirates, one of the Schreiner defensive players mistakenly shacked the ball into their own goal to give the Pirates a more comfortable lead over the Mountaineers.

The Pirate defense was lead by both senior captains Romie Reyna and Mary Cardone, and Schreiner was not able to take one shot attempt the whole game. The Pirate win gave Southwestern an improved record of 11-4 in the season

The five seniors who were celebrated today were Romie Reyna, Mary Cardone,  Alexis Barrientez,  Katey Ewton and Mallory Harkins.

Up next, the Pirates will travel to take on Texas Lutheran and Concordia University Texas next Friday and Sunday.
