1st Quarter Dooms UD Women's Basketball in Saturday's Setback to Schreiner
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball could not overcome a dismal first quarter in a 75-57 setback to Schreiner University on Saturday. After being outscored 21-4 through 10 minutes, the Crusaders (3-9, 1-5 SCAC) kept up with Schreiner (5-8, 3-3 SCAC) and got outscored by just one over the last three periods.
Sydney Williams shined in the game for the Mountaineers, leading all players with 26 points and 17 rebounds for an impressive double-double.
Schreiner raced out to a huge lead by scoring the first 18 points through eight minutes of play. Beyonce Perry (Lake Jackson, Texas) ended the scoring drought by hitting two free throws with 1:24 left in the quarter. Alissa Dutton (Houston, Texas) registered the first UD field goal with a layup in the final 12 seconds. Dallas was 1-16 from the floor that quarter.
Dallas scored at least 17 points over the next three quarters and held a 19-17 edge in the second frame to shrink the deficit to 15 at halftime. Perry had a three to bring the margin to 14 (34-20) in the final two and a half minutes, but Schreiner had an answer with a trey of its own. Perry got the score to 14 again by making an old fashioned three-point play a little under a minute later. A split at the line by Schreiner led to the halftime score.
A couple jumpers early in the third quarter by Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) and Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) cut the gap to 38-27. Josline Hernandez and Sydney Williams started a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to extend the advantage. UD surged toward the end to make it a 14-point deficit (54-40) and trailed by 15 after three.
In the fourth quarter, team's traded points early on and then a Perry trifecta brought the score to 60-48 with 7:21 remaining. Perry had another pair of free throws about midway through to send the margin back down to a dozen, but Williams grabbed the next six points to propel the Mountaineers' lead to 18. The largest lead for SU was 22 with 2:17 in the fourth.
Schreiner shot 38.8 percent (26-67), while Dallas was 30 percent (18-60). The Mountaineers had twice as many made trifectas with eight and seemed to always hit one at a crucial time to keep UD from getting closer. Both teams shot 68 percent from the free throw line with Dallas going 17-25 and the Mountaineers 15-22. The visitors pounded the glass with a 47-39 advantage on rebounds. SU had a 20-7 edge on second chance points. Both squads eclipsed 20 points in the paint with Schreiner leading by six.
Dallas was led offensively by Perry with 21 points, which was the second time to surpass 20 this campaign. She had all four made three-pointers by Dallas and was a perfect 5-5 at the charity line. The freshman added six rebounds and three steals. Oliveti was the other Crusader in double-digits for points with 10. Diaz secured nine points and led the team with eight boards. Panda Houseworth (Farmersville, Texas) dished six dimes and had a 4-4 showing at the line and eight points.
In addition to Williams' nice game, which featured 17 of Schreiner's 20 points in the final quarter; Hernandez and Alyssa Viera chipped in 11 and 10 points for the players scoring double-digits. Yasmine Arogunjo and Zahra Cross added nine points apiece. Cross and Viera dished four assists apiece, while Oni Boodoo and Gabby Ivarra had three each as the quartet accounted for the majority of SU's 17.

Dallas plays its final non-conference game of the year on Wednesday, January 15, at Dallas Christian College. The Crusaders prevailed over DCC in the Maher Center last month by four points (64-60).
