Spaethling Leads Balanced Attack vs. TLU

Marguerite Spaethling gave a glimpse to why she is the reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference player of year, pounding down a match-high 13 kills in No. 6 Colorado College's 21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Sunday morning.

Spaethling finished the match with a .478 attack percentage, with just two misfires on 23 attempts. The senior middle hitter also had a hand in two blocked shots.

Three other Tigers produced double-digit kills as part of the balanced attack. Sophomore middle hitter Georgia Mullins hit. 346 with 12 kills on 26 swings with only three errors, while Allie Freeburg and Laney Swan finished with 10 kills apiece.

Isabelle Aragon-Menzel posted her fifth career double-double with 45 assists and a team-high 18 digs.

Jaci Chambers put down five of her six kills in the first set when Texas Lutheran snapped a 10-10 tie with a 10-3 surge to build a seven-point cushion. CC closed to within 22-20 on a kill by Allie Freeburg, only to see the Bulldogs score three of the next four points.

The Tigers raced to an early 12-5 lead in the second frame and never let TLU closer than five points while squaring the match at one set apiece.

Spaethling had back-to-back kills midway through set No. 3 as Colorado College created some breathing room with a 6-1 run. Texas Lutheran cut its deficit to 17-14 before the Tigers closed out the set with an 8-3 burst.

Swan produced five kills on six swings in the fourth set, including one that triggered a 12-3 barrage that gave CC a 21-12 lead. The Bulldogs pulled to within five points before consecutive kills from Emma Hewlin and Spaethling finished the match.
