Zac Asbury Sets Career Points Record in Win Over MSOE

MILWAUKEE — Senior Zac Asbury scored six points in Southwestern's 13-4 win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), bringing his career total to 225 to become the men's lacrosse program's all-time career points leader. 

Asbury surpassed former teammate Kai Knight-Turcan, who finished his four-year career with 222 points. He did it in 23 fewer games played. Asbury is also the program's all-time career leader in assists with 129 and has 96 career goals. 

Southwestern opened the game with a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, assist with Asbury setting the tone, scoring on an unassisted goal at the 9:18 mark. After Matt Caldwell scored off a Jacob Hamilton feed, Asbury followed with another goal off a Nick Doxey assist with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter. 

Asbury showed off his playmaking wares to open the second quarter, finding Tommy Saueressig for the goal less than two minutes into the quarter. Tyler Johnson added an unassisted goal a few minutes later to put the Pirates up 5-0. 

MSOE found its offensive footing over the final eight minutes of the half, scoring three of the final four goals to trail Southwestern 6-3 at the half. 

Asbury helped Southwestern put the game away for good in the third quarter, opening the second half with an assist to Doxey, then following a Saueressig score with an assist to Ryan Sambogna. After two more Southwestern scores, Asbury closed the quarter with another goal, finding the back of the net off a Cody Foster assist with 54 seconds remaining in the third. 

Tyler Johnson found Conor Beckett with 11:39 remaining in the game for Southwestern's last score, capping off a 7-0 run. Tanner Whipps scored MSOE's fourth and final goal of the game. 

In addition to Asbury's heroics, Foster finished with three assists, and Doxey had two goals and an assist to each end the game with three points. Hudson Bearden went 11-for-19 on face-off opportunities, and Blake Sitterly had 14 saves. 

Southwestern improves to 3-2 with the win. The Pirates will return to the road next weekend with a game against Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, March 19, and Benedictine (Ill.) on Sunday, March 21.
