Tough Weekend for Dallas Volleyball in Austin College Classic

This past weekend the University of Dallas volleyball team had a two day, four match tournament set in Sherman, TX against the following universities: Austin College, Hardin-Simmons University, McMurry University, and Concordia University (TX). Unfortunately they were unable to escape with a win, although a team record was broken in the process and team finished strong against Concordia.

Friday's first match against the tournament host Kangaroos of Austin College ended in a loss; 12-25, 12-25, and 12-25. The Lady Crusaders were led by freshman outside hitter Theresa Wohldmann (Florissant, MO/Nerinx Hall H.S.) who led the team with 8 kills while also contributing 11 digs, and junior libero Kelli Fuentes (Rowlett, TX/Rowlett H.S.) who recorded 21 digs and a service ace.

Next up against Hardin-Simmons, UD put up a better fight, but still fell, 15-25, 17-25, and 18-25. Key contributors in this match were freshman setter Amanda Kitten (Slaton, TX/Lubbock-Cooper) and Fuentes who contributed 17 assists and 19 digs respectively.

As the weekend wore on the Lady Crusaders became tougher, but still were unable to get the win against the Indians of McMurry on Saturday morning, losing the match by the scores of; 16-25, 22-25, and 20-25. This was despite the efforts of junior middle blocker Celina Farrell (Corinth, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.), sophomore rightside Danielle Fuchs (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne H.S.), and Theresa Wohldmann who each supplied 7 kills and a total of 12 digs.

The final match of the day was a really tough loss for UD volleyball as they took the first two sets before falling in five, with the scores being: 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 17-25, and 4-15 in the deciding fifth set. During the match, Celina Farrell broke her own school record for block assists in a game by posting 11, the previous record was 10. She also contributed 6 digs, 3 kills and two service aces. Wohldmann once again had a solid day posting a stat line including a team high 10 kills, to go along with 2 assists, 11 digs, and a block assist.

With the four 4 losses, the University of Dallas volleyball team drops to 11-18 on the year. They will continue their season with an away match against Wiley College this coming Wednesday. The away match will be held at 7:00pm in Marshall, TX before the team hosts a two day, three match tournament of their own.
