Lutz nets game winner as CC blanks Millsaps

Box Score Senior defender Chris Lutz made the most of a rare scoring opportunity, breaking a scoreless tie early in the second half with his first career goal to help the Colorado College men's soccer team record a 2-0 victory at Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon.

Lutz collected the rebound of a shot by Alec Lee in the center of the box and calmly split a pair of defenders to record what proved to be the game winner in a must-win situation for the Tigers.

“It feels good,” the senior captain said. “We had four shots in row and it finally popped out. I just had to put it between two defenders from eight yards out.”

Lutz, who normally serves as one of the defensive anchors, was moved forward in the lineup to allow for the insertion of Alec Sowers at right back.

The Tigers added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when Morgan Wack found the net for the first time off of a series of give-and-go touches in the penalty area from Daniel Wright and Lorenzo Pozzolini.

“It was a textbook example of how to get through the defense,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “It was an exhilarating play that drew the compliments of the referee and opposing coach after the game.”

Pozzolini came from 22 yards out on the left side, beat his mark into the box, and laid the ball off to Wright, who sent a one touch pass on to Wack. The freshman forward drew the keeper toward him near the left post and slid the ball past him toward the right side.

Junior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz made two saves en route to his first career victory and second shutout.

The Tiger defense limited the Majors to just seven total shots and a pair of corner kicks.

“That's what Forrest needed to get back in the rotation,” Richardson said. “The central defense – Kyle Buchwalder and Andrew Worthington – performed exceptionally well. With the help of Ben Sandalow, they kept a clean sheet.

“It was a well-deserved victory and that second goal made it especially sweet.”

Colorado College, which improved to 6-2-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, returns home for league games against Birmingham-Southern College and Oglethorpe University next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
