COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 19th-ranked Tiger women's swimming & diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a 145-98 victory over fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference team Colorado College on Friday evening.
Trinity pulled out the victory by winning 10 events, including eight individual events and both relays. The Tigers also had 11 more second and third place finishes in the meet.
Leading the way was sophomore All-American
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird), who won three individual events today. Burns took the gold in the 1000 freestyle (11:13.89), the 500 free (5:25.52), and the 200 individual medley (2:12.16).
Senior All-Americans
Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) and
Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) also enjoyed solid starts to their final seasons with Trinity. Hagan had a pair of individual wins and was a part of one of the winning relay teams, while Myers swam in both winning relays and also had a win of her own. Hagan won the 200 free (1:58.43) and the 100 butterfly (58.36), and Myers snagged the win in the 100 free (54.68).
Joining Myers and Hagan on the 200 free relay team were sophomore
Kylee Hutchinson (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) and first-year
Amy Benson (Newmarket, N.H. / Phillips Exeter Academy), with the quartet swimming a time of 1:38.74 to win the race. Myers and Benson finished off the 200 medley relay win ahead of sophomore
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted) and first-year
Kyla Foxhoven (Austin, Texas / Westlake), with the team posting a winning time of 1:50.46.
Benson and Foxhoven also won the first individual events of their young careers today. Benson took gold in the 50 free with a time of 24.86 – finishing just ahead of runner-up Foxhoven's time of 25.03 seconds. Foxhoven won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.86, leading a Tiger quartet that took each of the top four spots in the event. First-year
Jenna Koh (Thomasville, N.C. / Ledford) was the 100 breast runner-up with a time of 1:09.30, followed by sophomore
Lindsay McKinney (Victoria, Texas / Saint Joseph) and her time of 1:12.97 in third, and first-year
Ellie Devens (Houston, Texas / Tomball) with a time of 1:13.46 in fourth.
Brooklyn Fuscone (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Hoffman Estates) was the runner-up on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards today, scoring 215.25 on the high board and 247.85 on the low board. Sophomore
Jules Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway) was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.66, and fellow sophomore and 2023 All-American
Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer) was second in the 1000 free behind Burns with a time of 11:34.47.
First-years
Allison Ortiz (Houston, Texas / Stratford) and
Julia Carter (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) were bronze medalists in the 100 fly and 100 back events, respectively. Ortiz finished in the 100 fly in 1:00.65,while Carter posted a time of 1:04.24 in the 100 back. Ortiz, Weihrdt, Koh, and junior
Elizabeth Molique (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro) were also third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.93.

"The women had a lot of fun tonight," said Head Coach
Cathleen Pruden. "There were some positive surprises, with some people stepping up and putting some great swims together. Despite some very challenging lineups, the energy stayed high and the women stayed engaged with what they could control."
