Pirates' Corner Kicks Push Men's Soccer Past East Texas Baptist

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Defender Garrison Van Houten scored his second game-winner of the weekend, pushing the Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team past the visiting East Texas Baptist University (ETBU) Tigers for a 2-1 victory.

Van Houten found the back of the net at the 68:58 mark in the second half on a header off a corner kick set piece triggered by senior forward Dejan Savic, placing the ball to where only Van Houten could get it.

The score marked the third goal of Van Houten's career and second this season, previously scoring on a breakaway pass from Michael Glode to defeat the Huston-Tillotson Rams on the road on Friday night. All three of his goals have been game-winners.

  • Kicking into a stiff wind in the first half limited the Pirates' long passes, a staple of their offense. Southwestern attempted just two shots in the half to East Texas Baptist's five.
  • East Texas Baptist had one shot on goal in the first half, going 0-for-3 on corner kicks with one save from goalie Jackson Krueger and great deflections from the Pirate backline.
  • Once the Pirates got the wind at their back, it was smooth sailing; pressuring the ETBU defense with seven shots, four of which were on goal.
  • The Pirates were able to pass the ball over the top of the defense in the second half, leading its forwards, who pressed the advantage to generate corner kicks. It was on such a pass to Jack Adams on a run that created the corner to setup Van Houten's score.
  • The Pirates scored two goals on five corner kicks.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 2-1-1. Southwestern will open conference play on Friday, Sep. 13 with a home match against Texas Lutheran University. Southwestern split the two games last season with each team getting a road win.
