No. 13 Colorado College volleyball team looks to defend its title as it advances to the championship round of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with a 3-1 win over host Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers will face Trinity University in the title match at 8:15 p.m. CT. Trinity upset No. 1 seed Southwestern University earlier in the day with a 23-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the Pirates, who are ranked No. 6 in the nation.
Colorado College was down 16-20 in the first set, but a kill by senior
Haley Hamilton sparked a 4-0 run to tie the game at 20 all. The Tigers took the lead at 22-21 with a kill by junior
Laura Goldsmith and were able to hold onto the lead to win the set, 25-23.
CC dropped the second set, 18-25 when it struggled from a poor .043 hitting percentage.
The Tigers rebounded in the third set, hitting a set-high .340 attack percentage on 21 kills. CC beat Millsaps in the third set, 25-20.
In the fourth set, with CC down 7-8 after Millsaps went on a 6-0 run, the Tigers called a timeout. The timeout stopped the Majors run as CC then went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead. The Tigers won the fourth and final set, 25-18.
Senior
Amy Schornack had a career-high 59 assists along with a career-high 26 digs to earn her first double-double of the weekend. Her 59 assists tied for 12th all-time for most assists in a single match.
Goldsmith led the Tiger offense with 15 kills and added 33 digs to lead the defense for her second double-double of the tournament.
Hamilton tied her career-high 12 kills to aid CC's offense, while sophomore
Devin Wilkinson also tied her career-high with 10 kills. Junior
Kate Squires broke her career-high with 11 kills and senior
Sarah Schmoker added 10 kills to be among five Tigers who scored double-figure kills.
CC also had six players obtain 18 or more digs during the match. Senior
Hannah Varnell had 26 digs to help in the backrow. Schmoker had a career-high 20 digs, while freshman duo Kirsten Liberty and
Julia Lawton each had a career-high 18 digs to aid the defense.
Colorado College improved to 30-6 on the season, while the Majors dropped to 22-12 this season.
