Tigers advance to SCAC championship match

No. 13 Colorado College volleyball team looks to defend its title as it advances to the championship round of the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with a 3-1 win over host Millsaps College on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers will face Trinity University in the title match at 8:15 p.m. CT. Trinity upset No. 1 seed Southwestern University earlier in the day with a 23-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the Pirates, who are ranked No. 6 in the nation.

Colorado College was down 16-20 in the first set, but a kill by senior Haley Hamilton sparked a 4-0 run to tie the game at 20 all. The Tigers took the lead at 22-21 with a kill by junior Laura Goldsmith and were able to hold onto the lead to win the set, 25-23.

CC dropped the second set, 18-25 when it struggled from a poor .043 hitting percentage.

The Tigers rebounded in the third set, hitting a set-high .340 attack percentage on 21 kills. CC beat Millsaps in the third set, 25-20.

In the fourth set, with CC down 7-8 after Millsaps went on a 6-0 run, the Tigers called a timeout. The timeout stopped the Majors run as CC then went on a 5-0 run to retake the lead. The Tigers won the fourth and final set, 25-18.

Senior Amy Schornack had a career-high 59 assists along with a career-high 26 digs to earn her first double-double of the weekend. Her 59 assists tied for 12th all-time for most assists in a single match.

Goldsmith led the Tiger offense with 15 kills and added 33 digs to lead the defense for her second double-double of the tournament.

Hamilton tied her career-high 12 kills to aid CC's offense, while sophomore Devin Wilkinson also tied her career-high with 10 kills. Junior Kate Squires broke her career-high with 11 kills and senior Sarah Schmoker added 10 kills to be among five Tigers who scored double-figure kills.

CC also had six players obtain 18 or more digs during the match. Senior Hannah Varnell had 26 digs to help in the backrow. Schmoker had a career-high 20 digs, while freshman duo Kirsten Liberty and Julia Lawton each had a career-high 18 digs to aid the defense.

Colorado College improved to 30-6 on the season, while the Majors dropped to 22-12 this season.
