Strong Second Half Earns Tie for Pirates

Strong Second Half Earns Tie for Pirates

On a breezy evening in Georgetown the Southwestern Pirates celebrated senior day as well as Power Up Pirates night.  Three seniors were recognized:forward  Jillian Curran, midfielder Laura Ornelas, and midfielder Maria Pollifrone

In the first 10 minutes the Pirates spent most of that time on the Hendrix side of the field, managing two good looking shots that just missed taking an early lead .  Despite an attacking offense and a strong defense early on, the Pirates gave up the first goal of the game 15 minutes in when Emilia Bussard launched a shot from outside the box to the lower left 90, just missing Sarah Nonaka's hand.  Minutes later the Pirates attempted to answer when a Laura Ornelas' corner found Kylie O'Connor at the far post.  A solid header was just denied by the keeper.  The remainder of the first half remained quiet as both teams tried to gain an advantage and hold the ball on the opposing side of the field with little success.

The second half started with a renewed Pirate squad as Jillian Curran drove deep into the Hendrix box and drew a penalty kick on a tackle in the box just 2 minutes in.  Lindsay Jakszta took the penalty kick and drove the shot past the diving keeper to even the score at 1-1.  The score was her first of the season.  The Pirates kept the pressure on by keeping the ball in the Hendrix box and were only victimized by unlucky bounces.Pirates like Paige Duggins and Cailey McLain were continuously putting pressure on the Warrior defense.  The Pirates' confidence continued to grow throughout the opening minutes of the first half as they continued to win balls and get off solid shots that were just missing the score.  Southwestern continued to rack up the shots with 8 shots, 5 on goal, 25 minutes through the second half.  Another scoring chance happened with just 15 minutes left in the game as the Pirates were awarded a free kick just outside the Hendrix box.  Laura Ornelas' shot was just tipped and sent wide of the goal on another unlucky break for the Pirates.  The Pirate took 12 shots to Hendrix's 2 in a dominating second half performance that evened the game.  At the end of regulation the Pirates had taken 17 shots to Hendrix's 4.

Despite the Pirate dominance in the second half, 90 minutes would prove to not be enough time to determine a winner in this contest.  In overtime the game went from one end to another.  It looked like the game would end on a sliding shot by Rebecca Petro but a diving save by the Hendrix keeper ensured the game would continue.  Strong defense on both sides sent the game to another overtime.  The second overtime went back and forth with no goals.  The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The tie sends Southwestern to 6-6-2 overall and 1-4-1 in confernece.  The Pirates will take to the field again October 24 against Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX.
