#19 Women Beat St. Thomas and are Second at D3 Shootout

CHICAGO/SAN ANTONIO – The 19th-ranked Tiger women's swimming & diving team competed at both the D3 Shootout hosted by the University of Chicago, as well as at home against the University of St. Thomas.

Trinity scored a huge 118-36 win against St. Thomas at home on Friday night, as the Tigers won 11 individual evens and both relays. Additionally, the women's team had 12 runner-up finishes (including the relays) and six bronze-medal performances. At the D3 Shootout, Trinity earned bronze in both relays, while also snagging a pair of second-place finishes and a race victory individually. The Tigers also had several performances crack the top 10 on the all-time list and there were also two record-breaking swims.

Trinity vs. St. Thomas
Jenna Koh (Thomasville, N.C. / Ledford) was the most decorated Tiger swimmer at the meet tonight, earning three individual wins, while also helping Trinity to a win in the 200 medley relay to start things off. Koh swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke races, finishing the 100 in 1:10.28 and the 200 in 2:30.76. She also took the top spot in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:40.43. Eight other Trinity swimmers won individual gold at the meet, but Koh was the only one to win more than one.

Julia Carter (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) got her victory in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.71, while also swimming leadoff in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay that also scored victories. The medley relay team finished in 1:53.10, while the free relay closed out the meet with a time of 1:42.04 on Friday. Carter was also the runner-up in the 200 backstroke (2:19.68).

Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) was a part of both winning relay teams tonight, swimming the anchor leg of the medley and the third leg of the free relay. She also took a solo gold in the 50 free with a time of 25.93 seconds and edging out her teammate Kylee Hutchinson (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) by just 0.01 seconds in the race.

Joining Carter and Brown on both winning relays tonight was Allison Ortiz (Houston, Texas / Stratford), who also earned a pair of individual medals. Ortiz was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:21.00, while also finishing winning the 100 fly in 59.38 seconds.

In addition to finishing second in the 50 free to Brown, Hutchinson was also the anchor leg of the winning free relay team. She was also able to get her own win in the 100 free with a time of 56.03 seconds. Ironically, she beat out Brown to the wall in the 100 free race by just under a half-second. Hutchinson was also the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay team that finished second in a time of 1:56.49.

Even though Lindsay McKinney (Victoria, Texas / Saint Joseph) didn't get the three gold medals to match Koh's total, she did score three individual silver medals and joined Hutchinson on the second-place medley relay team. McKinney was second in the 100 (1:12.27) and 200 (2:39.61) breaststroke events, as well as finishing as the runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:26.70).

Winning the 200 IM was Ellie Devens (Houston, Texas / Tomball), who finished in 2:18.67 to win it, while also picking up a pair of bronze medals. Devens was third behind Koh and McKinney in the 100 (1:15.32) and 200 (2:44.19) breaststroke races.

Elizabeth Molique (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro) also brought home plenty of hardware tonight, earning the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.16. She was also third in the 50 free (26.56) and was part of both silver medalist relay teams. Bethany Mueller (Buda, Texas / Hays) joined Molique on both runner-up relay teams and also had both a gold and silver medal individually. She was second in the 100 back (1:02.79) and later won the 200 back with a time of 2:16.33.

Also teaming up with Molique and Mueller on the 200 free relay were Erin Morie (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) and Emily Baggett (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood). Baggett picked up a second-place finish in the 500 free (5:53.04) and was third in the 200 IM (2:27.42). Morie won the 200 fly with a time of 2:17.33, then also finished second in the 100 fly in 1:03.49.

Renee Trombley (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) won the 1000 free race in 11:36.50 and was third in the 200 back with a time of 2:23.88.

Coach Speak
"We saw a number of improvements from our first meet, both in time and race execution," said Head Coach Cathleen Pruden. "The Tigers are exactly where they need to be at this point in the season. A little bit of rest in two weeks, and refining some race strategy is going to set us up for a successful mid-season invitational!"

Trinity at the D3 Shootout
Trinity scored 212 points tonight at the D3 Shootout and trails hosting University of Chicago (ranked fifth) by just 25 points. The Tigers are currently leading 11th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (CA) in third (207), No. 16 Washington University-St. Louis (197), and 10th-ranked Hope College (MI) (191). The stacked meet also features two other teams ranked in the top 25: No. 17 Swarthmore College (PA) and No. 22 SUNY-Geneseo.

The top performance for the Tigers on the road came from Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird), who set a meet record and earned an NCAA "B" cut with her winning time of 4:21.40 in the 400 IM. Burns also finished as the runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.62, and swam leadoff for the Trinity 800 free relay team that finished third in 7:41.38.

Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) was the second leg of the bronze medal relay team, while also picking up a pair of standout performances of her own. Hagan was the runner-up with a "B" cut time of 2:04.17 in the 200 fly and also finished third with a time of 1:53.78 in the 200 free. Her time in the 200 fly also breaks the Tiger record of 2:07.37 that was established back in 2010 by former Tiger Lisa Tucci.

Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted) and Amy Benson (Newmarket, N.H. / Phillips Exeter Academy) rounded out the 800 free relay team for the Tigers. Jacobson also earned a fifth-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 58.81 seconds and was second in the B final of the 200 free with a time of 1:56.10. Benson not only won the B final of the 50 free with her time of 23.64 seconds that wound up the second-fastest time of the night, but she was also on the 200 medley relay team that finished third for the Tigers.

Benson was the anchor leg behind Jules Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway), Kyla Foxhoven (Austin, Texas / Westlake), and Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie). The quartet was third in the race with a time of 1:45.37 on Friday. Wiehrdt was also 14th in the B final of the 100 back (1:00.30) and Myers was sixth in the 50 free with a time of 24.39 seconds.

Foxhoven had one of the most surprising results of the night, if only because she did it in the B final of the 100 breast. Foxhoven won the B final with her time of 1:04.08 that would have won the A final race and also earned her an NCAA "B" cut in the process. That time also breaks the school record that was set just last spring. Foxhoven and Myers also teamed up with a pair of Trinity men's teammates to take sixth in the mixed 400 medley relay with a time of 3:44.35.

In diving, Brooklyn Fuscone (Hoffman Estates, Ill. / Hoffman Estates) also earned a top-five finish in the 1-meter competition, scoring 210.05 points to finish fourth. Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer) was 13th in both the 200 fly (2:14.22) and the 400 IM (4:37.96) on Friday night.

Coach Speak
"The women got off to a phenomenal start tonight with two school records, a handful of program top 10 times, and a new meet record from Neely" said Head Coach Cathleen Pruden. "It is really exciting to be so competitive against a number of top programs. I'm proud of this group!"
