Baseball Falls Short Against Texas-Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas — Southwestern baseball and the University of Texas at Dallas Comets played a back and forth game that ended with the Pirates falling one run short in an 8-7 loss.

Both teams went through eight pitchers each in the weekday game, with Southwestern going off for 14 hits. Texas-Dallas drew nine walks with five hits of its own.

James Vaquero put Southwestern on the board first with an RBI double to left-center, scoring Maxwell Mims, who singled to center. Trent Raschke scored Vaquero with a single down the left-field line two hitters later to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Texas-Dallas answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Marcos Villegas, scoring Perry, who led the inning off with a triple.

Mims recorded an RBI triple in the second. Southwestern walked the first two hitters and hit another to start the second. Texas-Dallas capitalized with a sacrifice fly and a passed ball to tie the game.

Both teams plated three runs in the third. Raschke and Harris drew back-to-back walks with two outs, and Adam Werchan singled to left, scoring Raschke. Then, Jacob Tanner hit an RBI single up the middle, followed by a Ted Lobkowicz single to score Werchan. Deylan Moreno and Keagan Vance hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs.

The next three-and-a-half innings went scoreless until Texas-Dallas broke the tie in the seventh, taking advantage of a hit, three walks, and a hit batter to score two runs.

Werchan opened the top of the eighth with a single, and Tanner scored him with an RBI double to left-center. Lobkowicz followed with a walk, but the next three hitters went down in order to leave two stranded. Southwestern went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

Tanner led Southwestern with a 3-for-4 performance, knocking in two RBIs and a run scored. Werchan was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Southwestern drops to 4-5, and Texas-Dallas improves to 13-1. Southwestern will travel this weekend to play a three-game series against Hardin-Simmons starting Friday with a doubleheader on Saturday.
