Box Score Sophomore guard
Eric Houska and senior forward
James Lonergan combined for 43 points, but it was Colorado College's depth that fueled a 88-79 victory over Concordia University Texas on Monday night at Reid Arena.
Houska led all scorers with a career-high 23 points and tied his career best with five assists. Not to be outdone, Lonergan poured in 20 points, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and added five assists.
The outcome was in doubt until sophomore forward
John Hatch hit a pair of crucial three-pointers during the final five minutes. The first put the Tigers in front, 74-71, with a little more than four minutes to play. The second extended CC's advantage to 79-71 with just 1:45 to go.
Freshman guard
Jake Miller also came through in the clutch, dialing long distance with 6:11 to play to put Colorado College up 69-68 and then sinking a pair of free throws with 3:15 remaining to give the Tigers some breathing room at 76-71.
The Tigers need all of their help to offset the second-half exploits of freshman guard Ephriam Price, who made five of six shots from behind the arc en route to a team-high 21 points.
Concordia led 68-64 after Price sank a pair of free throws with 7:11 to play, but CC outscored the Tornados, 24-11, the rest of the way.
After falling behind 2-0, the Tigers scored nine consecutive points to build their first seven-point lead on a layup by sophomore forward
Chris Martin.
A pair of free throws from both sophomore guard Josh Samuels and freshman guard Joe Neal gave Concordia a 23-19 lead with 8:25 remaining in the first half, but CC answered with nine of the next 10 points to take a 28-24 advantage.
Colorado College took a 35-30 lead on a
Bobby Roth free throw with two minutes to play in the half, but the Tornados pulled to within 36-35 on a layup by Price with 22 seconds to go.
The Tigers were playing without starting forward
Andrew Maddock and lost senior swingman
Luke Winfield to a foot injury after landing awkwardly after connecting on a long three-pointer just 2:14 into the game.
In the first men's game of the day, Cole Van Schyndel poured in 23 points to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to an 84-73 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham.
