Duplain's Bucket Lifts CC Past Pirates

Box Score

Sophomore guard Nia Duplain scored in the lane on an inbounds play with 7.1 seconds to play to lift the Colorado College women's basketball team to a 71-69 victory over Southwestern University on Friday night at Reid Gymnasium.

Duplain, who finished with a season-high 10 points, cut down the left side of the lane, took a feed from junior guard Casey Torbet and scored on a contested layup.

The Pirates had one final shot to tie the game, but Naomi Brown's shot from the right side of the lane was off the mark and CC freshman guard Jade Odom grabbed the last of her game-high 12 rebounds.

The Tigers improved to 6-11 overall and is third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-3 mark.

Southwestern trailed 69-62 when Duplain scored with 2:44 to play, but senior guard Brooke Swift capped a 7-0 run when she tied the game with a three-pointer from the top right with 30 seconds to go.

McKenzee Gertz went 5-for-8 from behind the arc and led Colorado College with a season-high 27 points. The freshman winger also grabbed seven rebounds and had a pair of steals.

Torbet finished with 21 points and completed her first double-double with a career-best 10 assists.

It marked the first time since Jan. 9, 2009, that CC had two players score 20 or more points in a game. On that date, Melanie Auguste scored 28 and Eliese Hansberry had 26 in an 85-81 SCAC victory at Hendrix College.

The Tigers appeared to be in control when Gertz hit a jumper to give her team a 60-48 lead with 7:34 to play, but they managed just nine more points before Duplain scored the game winner.

Freshman forward Noel Pratts finished with a team-high 14 points for the Pirates, who dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.

Senior forward Madison Edwards added 12 points for Southwestern, while Swift had 11.

The Pirates were 12-of-18 at the charity stripe, while Colorado College made four of their five attempts.

CC was called for 18 fouls, while Southwestern drew just nine whistles.

The teams play again next Friday in Georgetown, Texas.

Prior to that, the Tigers plays host to Texas Lutheran University this Sunday at 1 p.m.
