Southwestern Improves to 8-4 with Win over Willamette

SALEM, Ore. -- The Southwestern University Pirates defeated the Willamette University Bearcats in a non-conference women's tennis match on Tuesday, March 15 at the Courthouse Tennis Center. With the win, Southwestern upped its record to 8-4 on the season. Willamette fell to 0-8.

At #1 singles, Anna Schneemann of SU held off Mikaila Smith (So., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) of Willamette in the first set, 6-4, before wining the second set, 6-2. Schneemann held a slim 3-2 advantage after five games in the opening set.

Smith and Schneemann also faced each other at #1 doubles. In the doubles match-up, Schneemann and Emilie Moeller downed Smith and Alexis Gjurasic (Fr., Olympia, WA/Capital HS), 8-4.

In #3 singles, Jessy Martinez won for the Pirates, 6-1, 6-2, against Willamette's Hannah Andres (Fr., Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS). Other winners in singles for Southwestern were Julie Swets at #2, Nicole Wilson at #4, Moeller at #5 and Maranda Kahl at #6.

Willamette will return to action on Saturday, March 19 with a match against Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho). The match will be played at Boise State University starting at 1 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats will play College of Idaho on Sunday, March 20 at 8 a.m.
