Trinity Tops Dallas Twice in Doubleheader

The Trinity University Tigers bested the University of Dallas Crusaders twice on Sunday defeating the men's baseball team 7-1 and 13-7. While Dallas was held to 3 hits in the first game of the doubleheader, they fared much better in the second act scoring 7 runs off 11 hits.

Sophomore righthander Michael Schweiss (Parker, CO/Chaparral H.S.) started the first game of the day, scattering 6 hits in 5 innings while giving up 2 earned runs. The Tigers got to Schweiss early scoring a run in the first and second innings, and two in the third inning. Schweiss kept Trinity off the boards in his last two innings, striking out four overall and inducing six groundouts. Trinity's starter held Dallas to just 2 hits in 6 innings. Michael Morrison (Dallas, TX/Lake Hill Prep) doubled and scored Dallas' lone run as he was knocked in by Devin Arnold (McKinney, TX/McKinney H.S.) in the seventh inning. Freshman reliever Chase Cooper (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) finished the game for Dallas recording a strike out and a fly out.

Sophomore righthander Michael Byers (Front Royal, VA/Seton Home School) started the second half of the doubleheader, giving up 6 earned runs on 8 hits. Byers was wild at times, walking four batters while hitting another, balking once and throwing a wild pitch. The Tigers struck early once again, this time scoring 4 runs in the first inning.

Several Dallas batters had good days at the plate. Freshman Michael Morrison started at third base in place of junior David Rettinger and led the offense by going 3 for 5 scoring a run and driving in another. Sophomore outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) had a good game, going 2 for 5 while scoring twice and knocking in a run. Freshman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) also collected 2 hits on the day while freshman Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.) went 1 for 4, knocking in two runs and scoring a run. Chase Cooper closed out the second game in the same manner as the first by striking out a batter and causing another to fly out.

After a long weekend full of travel and unfavorable weather, Dallas has a day off before travelling to Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, TX for one 9 inning game beginning at 4:00pm.
