Freeburg Powers CC Past Whitworth

Junior opposite hitter Allie Freeburg pounded down a match-high 14 kills to power the Colorado College volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Whitworth University in the final match of the 2019 Pikes Peak Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Reid Arena.

The seventh-ranked Tigers improved to 9-2 overall and finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record.

CC was in command from the outset, thanks in part to Freeburg who had kills on each of her first seven swings. The Tigers hit .324 in the first set while holding Whitworth to a -.059 percentage.

Freeburg finished with a .765 hitting percentage, a career-best for matches with 10 or more attempts. The all-tournament selection committed just one error on 17 swings.

Sophomore outside hitter Isabella Vasquez hit .471 with nine kills on 17 attempts, while first-year outside hitter Meaghan Hohman added seven kills on 16 tries for a .375 clip.

The Pirates tried to mount a comeback in the third set, but after they pulled to within 9-8 on a kill by all-tournament selection Emiko Kahler, Colorado College went on a 12-2 run to make the final result inevitable.
