SHERMAN, Texas – Southwestern’s Maria Pollifrone
(pictured) found the net with 3:10 left in overtime to lift the
Pirates past Austin College 3-2 in SU’s conference opener
Sunday. The Pirates start off with a 1-0 conference mark and
improve to 6-1 on the season. The ’Roos are now 4-3-1 overall
this season and 0-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
competition.
Austin College struck first when Casey found Treu with a long pass
and Treu put it in the net in the 19th minute, and that would
remain the lone goal of the first half as AC took a 1-0 lead into
the break.
True to form, it didn’t take long for the Pirates to even the
score, as a penalty kick at just over three minutes into the half
by Amy Douglas evened the score at 1-1.
Southwestern took the lead in the 62nd minute when Douglas found
Laura Kromann to make it a 2-1 game, but Austin College fought back
and knotted the game when D’Amore crossed the ball to Ryan,
who found Casey for the equalizer to send it into overtime.
However, the Pirates would dominate the overtime period,
outshooting the ’Roos 3-0 with the third resulting in the
game winner when Douglas found Pollifrone for the golden goal.
Kaitlin Ellege made five saves in the net for Austin College and
Sarah Nonaka made seven stops for the Pirates, who out shot the
’Roos 24-17 in the game including 17-8 after the first
half.
The Pirates take their stellar record to the west coast as they
face UC-Santa Cruz on Friday at 3:00 pm.
