SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team surged ahead of Schreiner University in the bottom of the fifth and never looked back, taking a 7-5 victory over the Mountaineers on Friday night at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 6-13 overall and 2-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third, when Schreiner got an RBI single from Jeffrey Williams to make it a 1-0 game. That's how things would stand heading into the fifth, when Cody Goggins singled home a run and a Nick Flynn double plated two more to make it 3-1 in favor of the 'Roos.

A throwing error allowed Oscar Gonzalez to come home in the sixth to make it 4-2, and after Schreiner got one run back in the seventh, Austin College plated three more in the bottom half of that inning. Justin Alphonse brought one run home, and Jake Webster plated a pair. Schreiner would tack on one run in the bottom of the ninth, but Jake Thomas shut the door on the Mountaineers for his second save of the season.

James Wyche, Clay Gilbert, Flynn, and Webster each had two hits to pace Austin College at the plate. Jordan Miller earned his first collegiate victory after a strong 6.0 inning performance, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Austin College will take on the Mountaineers for a doubleheader to wrap up the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
