Lonergan Powers Tigers Past Austin

Box Score Senior forward James Lonergan made the most of his final game at Reid Arena, scoring 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds to lead the Colorado College men's basketball team to a 74-64 victory over Austin College on Sunday afternoon.

Senior guard Justin Berardino added 11 points and five assists as the Tigers clinched a bye in the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and maintained their half-game lead over Texas Lutheran University atop the conference standings.

CC, which improved to 15-8 overall and 10-2 in league play, completed the home portion of its schedule with an 11-4 record.

The Tigers scored 12 of the first 14 points of the second half and opened a 10-point lead when sophomore forward John Hatch slammed home the rebound of a Berardino shot.

Colorado College extended its cushion to 15 points after senior guard Luke Winfield drained a three-pointer from the right wing and Lonergan scored in the paint with 13:24 to play.

The 'Roos battled back to within five points after junior guard Josh Dickerman hit a three-pointer with 7:09 to go, but the Tigers answered with an 8-3 spurt and regained a 10-point lead when Lonergan scored on a layup after taking a feed from Berardino.

After making only 13 of 29 field-goal attempts (.448) during the first half, the Tigers connected on eight of their first 12 shots during the opening 6:36 of the second frame.

Austin held a 25-20 lead, its largest of the game, when junior guard Brian Baehl scored on a layup with 7:57 to play. The Tigers answered with five in a row and tied the game on a bucket by sophomore forward Andrew Maddock, who finished with 18 points.

The 'Roos shot a fraction over 57 percent from the floor during the first half, but CC stayed even by making five of 15 shots from behind the arc.

Austin didn't hit a three-pointer until Dickerman connected from the right wing with just over seven minutes remaining in the game and finished just 2-for19 from long distance.

Baehl led the 'Roos with a game-high 23 points, while junior forward Austin Fleet recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Cedric Hudson added 13 points and nine rebounds for Austin, which slipped to 13-8 overall and 3-8 in the SCAC.

Colorado College wraps up the regular season next week with games at Trinity University and Schreiner University on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
