No. 16/16 Men’s Golf Puts Up Tournament-Best 289 to Collect West Region Invite Title

Mason, Nunez brought their momentum to finish second and fourth overall as all five Tigers finished 21st or better; Tuesday’s finish marks the first time since October that a Trinity player did not win an individual title

GEORGETOWN, Texas – No. 16/16 Trinity University Men's Golf won the 2023 West Region Invitational at the par-72, 6,567-yard Berry Creek Creek Country Club course Tuesday afternoon as a tournament-best third-round 289 (+1) clinched the event with an eight-stroke margin over its host, Southwestern University.

All four Tigers contributing to Tuesday's score finished between one-under and one-over. Sophomore Jacob Mason (Westminster, Colo. / Holy Family) led by notching a third under-par performance—the only player in the tournament to do so—though his Tuesday 71 (-1) fell one shot short of the West Region Invitational championship, marking the first time since October's Crusader Invitational that a Tiger did not top the individual podium.

Senior Daniel Nunez (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) joined Mason in the top five as his even third round Tuesday left him two-over (218) for the tournament, which tied for fourth overall. Nunez flirted with an under-par performance through much of the day, collecting three birdies over the first five pins along with a par-three bird on the 17th.

The impressive full-lineup performance was bolstered by the third and fourth cards between junior Giorgio Gianoulis (Salt Lake City, Utah / Rowland Hall) and first-year Carter Code (Calgary, Alberta / Manning) as each posted their respective best rounds of the tournament with matching 73s (+1).

After an 80 opened the tournament for Gianoulis Monday morning, the Tiger junior moved up 20 spots over the latter 36 holes to tie for 11th at 11-over (227). Code posted the best improvement for a Trinity player between rounds as his Monday 73 followed a second-round 80 to leap nine spots into a tie for 16th at 14-over (230).

First-year Aiden Marlow (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) finished one shot out of the top-20, alone in 21st with a 232 (+16) for the week. Marlow's effort as the fifth-finishing Tiger cleared every other fifth card in the field by at least four strokes.

Notable Numbers
  • Mason dominated the field on par-fives in this week's tournament at nine-under over 12 attempts, led by his eagle on the 13th pin in Monday's second round. The next-closest finished three-under in the category.
  • Marlow made Trinity the only team with two of the five eagles in the tournament as he cleared the par-four fifth in two swings in Monday's opener.
  • Mason was also the tournament's leader with 14 birdies, joined by Nunez in double-digits with 11 of his own. Trinity led the field with 47 birdies overall.
  • Gianoulis was second in the field with a one-under pace on par-threes while Nunez's even rate from the short tees was fourth.
