Women's Soccer Takes 3-0 Win Over Huston Tillotson

Women's Soccer Takes 3-0 Win Over Huston Tillotson
GEORGETOWN, Texas - Women's soccer made their season a six-game winning streak by defeating the Huston Tillotson Rams 3-0 this Tuesday evening, moving Mary Cardone past Sarah Nonaka's (2009-2012) career record of 21 shutouts.

In what started off as a slow game, the Pirates had their first spark when Alexis Barrientez, who scored her first goal of the season, kicked the ball into the back of the net after an assist from Juliana Chapa. Even though the Pirates were able to get the early lead, they still needed to ensure that the Rams could not make their way back into the game.

With 36 minutes on the clock, the Pirates attacked the Rams defense trying to get a shot up. The Rams tried hard to keep the ball away from the box, however, they fouled the Pirates and that resulted in a penalty shot. The Pirates go-to shooter, Romie Reyna, was up for the shot and seamlessly scored the Pirates second goal of the game to make the score 2-0 before the half.

Going into the second half, the Rams turned up the tempo trying to make their way back into the game. Huston Tillotson's  Lesly Merary Davila took eight of her nine shots in the second half, trying to make something happen for the Ram's offense. But Pirate goalie Mary Cardone kept all balls out of the box, making this her fifth shutout game of the season.

With the clock winding down and the Pirates still able to keep the ball in the Rams territory, Alexis Guajardo, who had previously scored two goals against Texas Lutheran University, scored the third and final goal of the game after a  short pass from Whitney Whitehill.

Cardone had eight saves for the Pirates and Reyna scored her second goal of the season. Guajardo scored her third career goal as a freshman.

Up next, the Pirates will host two home games against the Johnson and Wales Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m., and then against the McMurry War Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.
