Trinity Cross Country Teams Shine in 2023 Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity men's and women's cross country teams opened up their seasons at the University of the Incarnate Word Twilight Meet for the second straight season, with several individuals improving their times from last year's event.

"Both teams averaged faster than last year," began Head Coach Emily Daum. "Our men averaged 17 seconds faster and our women averaged eight seconds faster for our scoring positions. Lots of personal best, on the same course as last year, shows they definitely put in the work over the summer. We're excited to continue building over the coming weeks."

The women's team finished second behind Baylor University in the meet, but finished in front of other non-Division III teams in the meet - including host NCAA I Incarnate Word. The Trinity men were in fourth place behind three other NCAA I schools. Krista Wolfhope (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) led the Tiger women with a seventh-place individual finish in her collegiate debut. She led a pack of three Trinity women's runners in the top 10 and seven total among the top 20 individually. Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) led three Trinity men in the top 22 and a total of eight in the top 40.

Wolfhope finished in 15:04.1 and was joined in the top 10 by sophomore Josette Gurule (Santa Fe, N.M. / Academy for Technology and the Classics) and senior Ellie Catron (Spring, Texas / The Woodlands Christian). Gurule was ninth with a time of 15:06.9, followed by Catron's time of 15:08.6 that earned her 10th place.

Senior Madison Habeck (Lake Jackson, Texas / Clute Brazoswood) was 12th with her time of 15:13.7, while first-year Cali Good (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) finished in 15th and posted a time of 15:21.1 in her Tiger debut. Sophomores Em Miller (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) and Grace Etzel (Friendswood, Texas / Friendswood) joined their teammates in the top 20, finishing 17th and 18th, respectively.

Salony's time of 18:48.8 was good for eighth place in the men's race, while Diego Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Great Hearts Monte Vista North) was 14th with his time of 18:57.3 on Friday night. Nathaniel Trevino (San Antonio, Texas / Central Catholic) crossed the line in 19:07.1 for 22nd place, and Eli Karg (Friendswood, Texas / Friendswood) was just outside the top 25 after finishing 26th in a time of 19:12.8.

Both Trinity teams are back in action at another UIW meet on September 16, racing at Windcrest Golf Course on Saturday morning. The lone home meet of the year for the Tiger men and women will follow on September 22 at Olmos Basin.
