Gertz Nets 18, but CC Falls to Poets

Colorado College was unable to replicate its performance in Friday's win over Occidental College and dropped a 55-43 decision at Whittier College on Saturday.

Sophomore winger McKenzee Gertz scored a game-high 18 points for the Tigers, who split their first two games in Southern California. Gertz converted on seven of 18 shots from the floor, including three of nine from behind the arc.

Her three-pointer midway through the second quarter leveled the score at 13-13, but the Poets closed out the half with an 11-6 run.

After sophomore guard Jade Odom sank one of two free throws to pull Colorado College to within eight points with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter, Whittier went on a 12-2 tear to open an 18-point cushion after 30 minutes.

CC whittled its deficit to 54-43 when Julia Moore hit a jumper with 31 seconds to go, but that was as close as it would get.

Odom finished with seven points and was one of three Tigers to grab eight rebounds. Gertz and junior guard Nia Duplain also grabbed eight boards.

The Poets scored 24 points off 22 Colorado College turnovers, but it was 1-for-9 shooting by the Tigers during the third quarter that allowed Whittier to beak the game open.

Cali Cubel led the Poets with 13 points and four assists.

Monica Hannah added 10 points for Whittier, which improved to 3-0.

Colorado College wraps up its three-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon at the University of La Verne. The game tips off at 2 p.m. PT.
