Middle Innings Cost Pirates against Hardin-Simmons

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Cowboys of Hardin Simmons scored 11 runs early in the game and held onto the lead to defeat Southwestern University 11-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Rockwell Field. The loss drops the Pirates to 3-5 on the season while HSU improves to 6-1.

Hardin Simmons piled on five runs in the second, two runs in the third, and four in the fourth, to take a commanding 11-0 lead through three and a half innings.

Southwestern had their chances getting runners in scoring position in the first inning and were able to capitalize with one run in the fourth when Cray Betts' single to right center drove in Lance Gottardy who reached on a walk.

After the rocky middle innings the Pirate pitching staff settled in and with a strong defensive presence held the Cowboys scoreless.

SU had three hits to HSU's 14. Nick Cox garnered the loss while Kyle K'Alessio got his first win of the season for the Cowboys.

Southwestern returns to conference action this weekend, heading to Sherman, Texas to face Austin College for a two game series beginning with one game on Saturday.
