Pirates Fall to UMHB Despite Strong Start

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates opened on an 8-3 run but weren't able to sustain the push as they dropped their fourth game of the season, falling 82-56 to Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday night.

Daniel Mataya (pictured) got things rolling for the Pirates with a pair of threes in the opening minutes but Southwestern went cold the rest of the first half, shooting just 28.1% from the field and 18.2% from three point range. The Pirates trailed by 14 points, 44-30, at halftime despite committing just seven turnovers and being nearly even in rebounds (22-21).

In the second half Mary Hardin-Baylor capitalized defensively by scoring in transition and built the lead to 28 with seven minutes to play and cruised to the win.

Southwestern committed just 15 turnovers, but UMHB turned those turnovers into 20 points and committed just nine themselves.

Logan Hurley led with 11 points while the Crusader's Sterling Phillips and Marlon Miller led all scorers with 15 points.

The Pirates hit the road once again as they head to the Randolph-Macon Classic over Thanksgiving break. SU faces Virginia Wesleyan on Friday at 3pm CT.
