Tigers Rally to Sink Southwestern

Facing the threat of going down two sets, Colorado College overcame a 23-19 deficit in the second set to level the match and went on to record a 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-9 victory over Southwestern University in the final match of the weekend.

CC improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Haley Harris ignited the comeback with one of her match-high 15 kills, and then the senior outside hitter served the next four points as the Tigers grabbed a 24-23 lead on a blocked shot by junior right side hitter Allie Freeburg and sophomore middle hitter Georgia Mullins.

The Pirates tied the score at 24-24, but a kill from senior setter Lizzy Counts gave CC the lead, and an assisted block from Counts and junior middle hitter Emma Hewlin closed out the set.

After opening a 19-13 lead in the third set, the Tigers withstood a Southwestern rally to get to within a point, but back-to-back side-out kills from Harris gave Colorado
College the set and the momentum that carried through the remainder of the match.

Harris added 17 digs for the Tigers to complete he second double-double of the season and the 23rd of her career.   

Mullins finished the match with 13 kills and four block assists.

Counts nearly produced a triple-double, finishing the day with 35 assists, 11 digs and seven kills.
 
Inside the Box Score
Southwestern hit .065 as a team and became the ninth opponent to hit less than .100 against CC this season.
CC dropped the first set for just the fourth time this season.

Colorado College Standouts
Counts set a season high with seven kills.
Junior setter Isabelle Aragon-Menzel finished with 12 assists and a career-best 22 digs.

Southwestern University Standouts
Emma White produced nine kills and a team-high 19 digs.
Riley Brantley posted nine kills and had a hand in three blocked shots.

Southwestern dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC

Next for the Tigers
Colorado College has a 10-day break before returning to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1, against Johnson & Wales University at Reid Arena.
